Latest News

JANUARY 2010

It’s official!

HUNTINGFIELD REBEL was the most popular stallion in Ireland in 2007 with 210 foals born in 2008.  That was 90 more than the next most used which was Lux Z.  We already knew this as the truckloads of mares arriving at KYLEMORE STUD to visit him, plus the daily shipments of semen around the country bore witness to his popularity.  All credit to the Brodericks who have done a superb job both in the marketing and the management side.  Rob has never looked better and is extremely happy as he reaches his 20th year.  We are also delighted that our plan from some 22 years ago to restore the GLENSIDE line has happened.  Rob’s father , GLENAGYLE REBEL who died in South Africa in 2008 has also come into the limelight as one of his sons,

QUANTUM LEAP has been chosen to be part of the first ever South African Eventing squad which is planning to compete in the World Championships this year, training in France.

This is his campaign:

Quantum Leap and Heidi Wood will be competing (Eventing):

25/26/27 March 2010   Fontainebleau   France

21/22/23 May 2010  Saumur  France

16/17/18 July 2010  Aachen Germany

Jean Pierre  Camboulieves, a top FEI coach from France has been appointed as National Coach to the Springbok Eventing Team he will continue to train and mentor the team who will be based at Fontainebleau in France.then off to the World Equestrian Games USA  28 Sept - 3 October 2010.

Quantum Leap, this is him recently competing...

Other news is that SUMA CLOUDBURST SSZ (Chellano Z/Suma’s Sky’s Ablaze) has made it to his first show.  He behaved very well, and was brave and went about his business.  He can be seen on YouTube (click link)

The autumn and early winter weather has played havoc with our good intentions.  Firstly it was unbelievably wet and now it has been severely frosted (and snowed) up so we have not been able to get our two showjumpers out for a cross-country run.  FANNY BRICE jumped clear at the shows she went to but was not on top form and a back problem was quickly spotted.  So after treatment for a few days she has been waiting for a change of scene hunting in Carlow.  And our lovely Rosie’s (Suma’s Sky’s Ablaze) son, CLOUDBURST SSZ (Chellano Z) has finally got back into work feeling like a new man after his six month rest.  Donncha Dermody is the lucky man who has had the job of restoring his confidence and he is thrilled with him.  Many many thanks to Liz Kent for her work on him. (seen here as a 3 yr. old)

Meanwhile in Holland SUMAS FUDGE has found a new home and SUMAS TALIBAN (VDL Taloubet ex It’s an Ology) has started his jumping career and looks very promising as a 4 year old.  He is very big but moves lightly and is so far proving very easy.  Our TB mare Emsara (Mr. Lord)  is in foal to VDL Zapatero (CHIN CHIN), and her 2009 colt by Indoctro is still at the VDL Stud.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2009

Our two ID colts BRANDON and DAN THE MAN safely sold we bought another filly to accompany SUMAS CAPSICUM (Capitalist-Sumas Katy by Huntingfield Rebel) Then another………….then another!  Two smashing potential high class showjumpers by WOMANIZER and RAMIRO B, and a charming HUNTINGFIELD REBEL/Clover Hill Irish Draught.

See them on YouTube.

We are delighted with them all as they represent the best of their type.  The two sport horses are by ISH Approved warmblood stallions and out of top female Irish breeding. i.e. Diamond Serpent/Bahrain/Ozymandias and Cruising/Arctic Que /Rasputin.

SUMAS FANNY BRICE has gone to get fit with Catriona before going back into work with Steve Smith.  She is delighted to be doing something again though she does love feeding her face all summer in the paddocks.

SUMAS BLACK FOX won his fifth Event in September and was chosen to represent the Irish Stud Book for 7 year olds at the World Breeding Championships at Lion d’Anger.  Sadly he was a bit sore and the decision to withdraw him was made with a view to more exciting things in the future. (2012 Olympics, maybe??)

His full sister SUMAS MAYBE (VDL Arkansas/Vixen’s Frolic by Horos USA) is going really well for Mike Murphy and now has 138 points. She won 2 good classes against the clock recently and is pictured here jumping

1.30 with ease. Susie says “Royal Penny is still going strong” for those who remember the 13.2 great great great grandma on which she won everything from Show classes to Grade A in the 50s as did her son Foxes Frolic (a gelding by Blue Cliff) in the 60’s.

Our Dutch bred TORITE who is now with Pam Stevenson having had 3 foals for us came over from Scotland to jump very well in Cavan and the same weekend her son ZAK by Hold Up Premier started his career with a win in the 1.10.

And we have one other new addition who is a full time occupation at the moment, Julie the 8 month old German Shepherd.  She is gorgeous!

2 colts entered for

Goresbridge ID sale on Friday 9th October 2009,

Very short video clip on Youtube, please click to view.

Both are weaned, marked and chipped. The mare is not related to either (she is by Huntingfield Rebel and is the dam of the little filly) The big grey colt is by Crosstown Dancer ex Mountain View mare, by Blue Peter. The mother is a fabulous big mare who hunted in the UK for years and is only back to breeding now. She is a half sister to the stallion The Bard, and out of an own sister to Blue Henry.  She is also in the sale (not in video as already weaned)

This is the ONLY Crosstown Dancer entered in the sale.   The chestnut is by Echo King (Flagmount King) out of a Pride of Shaunlara mare, It's an Ology by Pride of Shaunlara.  With his unusual marking he won't make the breed standard but he is all quality with great bone and should make a fantastic big horse in the hunting field or should jump like his dam and at least four other siblings.

STOP PRESS!!

As of this moment, Snai SELDANA is the top horse in Europe!  Tomorrow she goes into the Finals as the only horse to have jumped a double clear in the European Championships.

We wish her and her jockey, Natale Chaudani the best of luck.

Well, sadly, that didn't last as Seldana hit two fences in the first round of the Individual Finals so finished out of the medals.  Natale was gutted but he said to the BBC that, (as we know from her time with us) she is a lady with her own mind!  He did get a silver medal with the Italian team however.

AUGUST NEWS

Well, where do I start our congratulations?  Firstly to HUNTINGFIELD REBEL’S sons, CASTLEGAR REBEL  who was the overall colt champion at the IDHBA show in Mullingar last week following on his successful career last year as a foal. Also to his daughter TIEVENNY REBEL LADY who both took 2nd and 3rd prizes from the very strong brood mare classes and was 2nd in the RDS this week for owner Harry Wilson  And another son, Marie McGroarty's EDNAGOR TED was the ID colt foal winner  and Champion Foal overall in the RDS too.

But the two eventers that have been much mentioned in our news recently have again been top of their game.  Stellor Rebound by VDL RICOCHET won an exciting and hard fought class for the title of the best Five yr.old  Future Event Horse in the RDS.

And SUMAS BLACK FOX  (VDL ARKANSAS/ VIXEN’S FROLIC by HOROS) won his first two star Event at Ballindenisk and what’s more Nicola Ennis has been picked with him as a “Stepping Stone” candidate, similar to what Sharon Quigley and Sumas Sound of Music are doing in the U.K, for future international jumpers.

But the biggest surprise at the RDS was the brilliant win of the Italian team in the Aga Khan cup and helped by two excellent rounds from SNAI SELDANA shown here enjoying her grazing at Suma Stud, back in Co. Meath where we reared her from a foal!

Who would have picked her then as the lean, mean machine that she is now!

Finally another offspring of DISTANT MUSIC (dam of Maria and Fanny) made his showing debut, finishing sixth in a strong middleweight 3 yr old class.  SUMAS BONO, by ARD VDL DOUGLAS now rechristened TJM RENEGADE looked fantastic when shown by Margo (M) and prepared by Ted (T) watched by John (J) Connolly and for a future jumper he is an outstanding model.   Hopefully next appearance there will be in the Four Year Old jumpers in 2010.

Bono, now TJM Renegade         Bono as a foal with

                  at RDS                                  with Distant Music

JULY NEWS

SUMAS FANNY BRICE has just come home for a summer holiday having made huge strides since starting her career in March with Steve Smith.  She has done everything asked of her, jumped about 18 double clears up to 1.10 and did one 1.20 for experience.

She is still playing “catch-up” having had a foal last year but by 2010 this will level out.

Meanwhile in Holland, SUMAS FUDGE, the 3 yr. old VDL Douglas daughter of SUMA’S COFFEE by VDL Pessoa is being broken by JUDITH RIBBELS who did such a lovely job with both Fanny and Surprise.  She is showing an exceptional jump when loose so if she can translate this ability under saddle we have a winner coming up. She, of course, is for sale to a serious buyer. The Douglas stock are really taking the country by storm now and any number of them are qualified for the RDS.

Our ex inmate VDL RICOCHET  (above) who sadly was gelded after he was turned down for full approval on the ISH, has come up with some excellent results recently.  Sharon Martin’s gelding BALLYCREELY BOY  out of SUMA LITTLE MO by HUNTINGFIELD REBEL was the Champion hunter in Balmoral recently, having previously won the Smalls and was Reserve Supreme.  Also a winner there, THE SPRUCE GOOSE who was by Rico out of a SUMA’S MURPHY’S LAW dam.

Excelling in the Young event horse classes, the FEHL, Sarah Ennis’ STELLOR REBOUND is an exciting prospect and there are several more on the go. (Pic , the image of his dad)

Some of our older stock have been listed as winning recently, SUMAS FLASHLIGHT (Glenagyle Rebel-Suma’s Light Up by Pride of Shaunlara) won the 1.10 at Balmoral, now aged about 17!  She is an RID but sadly never bred yet.  She is also the “aunt” of Ballycreely Boy!

One other mention must be made (who was not homebred but is the son of Susie’s cousins Stephen and Carolyn L-O’K,) of Arthur Lanigan-O’Keeffe, aged only 17 but winning the Under 21 British Modern Pentathlon with a score which would have placed 2nd in the Open!  He is a live hope for Ireland in the 2012 Olympics.  He is an excellent rider and that is a great help in this sport.  Well done Arthur!

JUNE 2009

  ...foals, foals, foals...

This is Ology and Danny, (the second born foal) and the other is
Brandon and Duiske (yes, scratch that bit just there please!)

Here are two of our foals, haven't managed to take the middle one yet but Katy had this filly last night.  She is being an excellent mother (Rob ex Crosstown Dancer mare) She is by a lovely Capitol 1 horse, Capitalist who stands nearby at Cullintra Stud, The Rower.

Crosstown Dancer colt (shown with dam,

Kenson's Heaven's Above aka Lottie)

The third one is Duiske, 2008

by Puissance ex Torite by Marlon.

APRIL 2009

SUMA'S FANNY BRICE has just jumped her fourth consecutive double clear and she is gradually getting rid of her matronly belly which she needs to do and to put up jumping muscle. Half sister SUMAS SOUND OF MUSIC is on a well earned rest after performing consistently well on the Sunshine Tour.  She will be back in work soon

We are thrilled to welcome our first foal of the year, BRANDON by CROSSTOWN DANCER out of our newest mare, KENSONS HEAVEN'S ABOVE. Healthy and happy and so is mum.

She was good to us and foaled exactly on 11 months so only 3 nights watching.  Our first ID for six years so we had forgotten how strong they are. He will be grey which is more popular

An update on the last three items. Firstly, the talk in Cookstown went very well with over 200 breeders there.

Daan Horn showed videos of his lovely team of stallions. How beautifully presented they are. Catherine Rudenko from Red Mills gave us a fascinating insight into how easy it is for horses to be overfed and to get ulcers which can cause a lot of pain and of course affect performance. Which is sometimes the only reason riders will try and see what is hurting the horse.

SUMAS BLACK FOX (VDL ARKANSAS) upped his game by coming 2nd in a CNC* at Tyrella and should be winning soon.

STOP PRESS No sooner had I written that than I heard that today also at Tyrella HE WON! Well done Nicola!

Some interesting latecomers to eventing also chalking up their first wins, HUNTINGFIELD CHARLIE (aged 10) by HUNTINGFIELD REBEL winning and LILY TWOHATS   by HOROS U.S.A. (aged 14!) was 3rd also in a One Star at Tyrella.

In the U.K. SUMA'S PRIDE by SUMA'S MURPHY'S LAW won a section of the trials at Goring.

Finally, although we didn't see it as we are both suffering from heavy colds, SUMAS FANNY BRICE  got her first points today at Barnadown, jumping double clear in the main arena.

MARCH 2009

Sumas Fanny Brice

makes her jumping debut with Steve Smith.  A long way to go before she emulates her half sister

Suma Sound of Music!

Although she is now 5 she is only like a 4 yr old having had the unfortunate foal by Indoctro last year.  She has plenty of talent it would seem.

Surveying the ring & in the pocket

SUMAS Black Fox

A nice article about Nicola Ennis showed this picture of SUMAS BLACK FOX competing in 2008.  By VDL ARKANSAS out of VIXENS FROLIC by HOROS U.S.A. he is destined for 2 Star competitions this year.  Another who sold at our Dispersal Sale, to Jody Madden. His own sister SUMAS MAYBE has kicked off this season jumping 120s clear with Michael Murphy.  VIXEN'S FROLIC was a brilliant brood mare, unconventionally bred with a mixture of everything from pony upwards but she had the rare ability to consistently breed jumpers.  The final filly now 5 is with Joanne Sloane Allen called SUMAS ZORRO by VDL DOUGLAS and she is looking very promising too.

Now that spring is showing a bit of its face we start thinking about Breeding again. I have been invited to give a presentation called "Like Mother, Like Daughter" at the Glenavon Hotel in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone on March 18th. It is due to start at 4 o'clock with various workshops on Nutrition, Worming etc. The main speakers kicking off with me at about half seven, then a talk on nutrition and finishing with Daan Horn from Holland on stallions. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.Should be a good night and we hope to see you there.

FEBRUARY 2009

This site is getting very depressing as yesterday we had more sad news, this time from Canada. GARRYOWEN OF SUMA the dearly loved RID stallion of Barb Bowen and her family suffered a fatal heart attack in his stall.  In 2007 the family had brought him all the way to the IDHS.NA Show near Chicago when they heard I would be there and it was thrilling to see him and a string of his stock who had all inherited the family jump.

GARRYOWEN OF SUMA

Winter 2009

“Shaun” of course was a full brother to two International showjumpers in CORAL SEA and SUMA’S OSCAR by PRIDE OF SHAUNLARA out of CARLISHEEN MOLLY by SOLOHEAD.  Shaun won the ID foal Championship at the RDS in 1984 and was sold that day to go to Canada.  However, he disappeared into the mire and was only re-discovered about 6 years ago, living in a field with some TB mares and a whole lot of his own daughters.  The Irish Inspectors passed him for full RID and finally he was in a yard that respected both his breeding, his conformation and his potential as a stallion. They loved him to bits and will really miss him.      R.I.P Shaun

.

GOOD NEWS however from Spain where SUMA SOUND OF MUSIC has gone with the Quigley entourage for the next five weeks. In her first competition in the Grand Tour B she finished 10th with an easily taken clear.

JANUARY 2009

Everyone who lives in the country knows that where you have livestock you have  deadstock and we have just had the proof of this yet again.  Our lovely Indoctro yearling who had overcome an early damage to his hind leg had to be put down as it had deteriorated badly after it seemed as if it had repaired perfectly.  A financial loss, yes, but also a sad loss of potential and such a charming character. Meanwhile his mother SUMA’S FANNY BRICE, (half sister by VDL Arkansas to SUMA’S SOUND OF MUSIC) has gone into light work with Catriona and has forgotten nothing since she was broken as a 3 year old in 2007.

For those who attended our 2004 Dispersal sale at Ashfield, this is a follow up to see what has happened to the horses that were sold.  All in all they have done very well!

DECEMBER 2008

SUMAS ERICA (by VDL Ricochet out of Suma's Hapi)

Another happy customer...

Dear Marily & Susan,

It has been a while since you heard anything from me, but I wanted to have something that was worth informing you of. After a trip to Kernan’s last Saturday “Rica” has qualified for the Horse Sport Ireland Winter League final at Cavan on 13 th December in the amateurs, the 1.0m and the 1.10m. This is a league purely for irish bred horses and she was just fantastic in all the classes. ...

She is a stunning mare in every aspect looks, athleticism, temperament and most of all trainability which I have discovered is the most important ingredient. They can be as talented as you like but if they don’t want to do it you sure can’t make them. She is much admired and enquired about and I could have sold her a hundred times over, but I feel privelidged to own her and have no intention of parting with her at any price!...   Tanya Smith

NOVEMBER 2008

We have welcomed several visitors recently including family members on both sides and also 3 "bonny scots" lassies who took TORITE  home with them.  She has left us a gorgeous filly SUMAS DUISKE with Irish/continental breeding (Puissance/Marlon) which we think is the modern recipe to succeed in jumping. Duiske and Doc (SUMAS SOUND OF SILENCE) are out in their woolly rugs as there is still pleny of grass here, but they get 2 feeds a day as well.

SUMA'S LEGACY has gone on loan to a friend in the UK who will hack, hunt and maybe do some competitions with her before she gets too old.  The time will give her foals a chance to make something of themselves, particularly SURPRISE in the UK and 3 yr old VDL Douglas filly, SUMA'S ANYWHERE who is for sale at the VDL stud in Holland.

Finally CLOUDBURST SSZ (for Suma Stud Z as he had to have his name starting with the letter "C" for Chellano Z) has gone to Ross O'Hare's yard where he and Margo Connolly (she of the TJM partnership) have started to break him.  He still has wolf teeth which have to come out so he will get plenty of time. Not a problem with a promising one like him.

OCTOBER 2008

Well we had a marvellous time at the Horse of the Year Show and thoroughly enjoyed seeing SUMAS SOUND OF MUSIC competing in the Foxhunter Finals.  Apparently over 20,000 start in the competition during the year and the top 24 get to the finals (2 in each of 12 Regionals) So Maria was in high class company but no way out of contention.  16 incl. her went clear in the first round and she just rolled one in the jump off to finish 9th.  Shaz (Sharon Quigley) was disappointed as she felt she had the winning of the class but that's jumping.  Here is a photo of her taken recently.  She is incredibly consistent and will be jumping Grand Prix next year.

Meanwhile on the home front we sold SUMAS LOTHARIO to Tom and Ray Carroll at the Elite Foal sale in Cavan and the day before SUMAS RANEE found a new home in Galway with Joe Dolan.  Rio and his mother Legacy were both off form on the day as they had gorged themselves on too much haylage (my fault, as they had to be there overnight)  So we were pleased enough and wish all the buyers best of luck.

Our two remaining foals, Doc and Duiske are now weaned and the mares are doing fine.

On the stallion front HUNTINGFIELD REBEL has had two champion colt foals and the Champion Young Horse at the Irish Draught show in Mullingar.  VDL ARKANSAS has moved house and is now down with Rob at KYLEMORE STUD ( www.kylemorestud.com) where they are very excited by him.  He has had so much success this year with the highlight being 5 y.o. Coppindell winning the Consolation class in Zangersheide as well as topping the IHB League.  The Archie stock are great sellers and everyone loves them to break and ride.  His eldest are still only 7 and of course he was back in Holland for a couple of seasons so has no 3 yr olds and very few 2yr. olds.

SEPTEMBER

Well a bit of good news for the stud!  SUMA SURPRISE (VDL Arkansas/Suma Legacy) was sold at Goresbridge on Friday making the second highest price so far.  She behaved impeccably, rode beautifully and with a clean sound V.S. cert she looked cheap even at €10,000.  There must have been at least 6  bidding for her but she was bought by Harold Lusk for Christine Baker in the UK where she will now continue  jumping .  We wish her all the luck and will follow her career with great interest.  This should also focus buyers attention on SUMA LOTHARIO ( Womanizer/Suma Legacy)who is coming up in the Cavan Elite Foal Sales on 2nd October LOT 423 as he is a cracker too!

We are delighted that an ex-inmate of ours VDL ARKANSAS is really proving to have been an inspired choice of stallion for Irish mares.  At the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS yesterday his daughter COPPINDELL won the Irish Horse Board League Final on points having finished a close sixth in the Final round.  She had an unlucky fence to keep her out of the jump off which was won really well by Lady Latt who challenged her all the way. In the competition no less than 5 horses by Archie had qualified, and another, NO MORE TALK finished fifth. The only VDL ARKANSAS entered in the forthcoming Goresbridge sales is our own four year old SUMAS SURPRISE (Lot 488)  who will make someone a lovely horse with a choice of careers.

Meanwhile in Spruce Meadows, Canada, Cameron Hanley competed on SOUTHWIND VDL whose dam, Helena is a half-sister to VDL ARKANSAS!

Suma's El Greco (Taloubet VDL ex Brush Strokes) up. He has done very nicely with Owner Victoria Clarke for his first season as a 4 y.o. and been much admired.

AUGUST 2008

SUMA SOUND OF MUSIC (Maria) is having a purple patch with Sharon Quigley recently including this week at the BSJA Scope Championships.

Read from her own blog below:

27/8/08

Shaz came 2nd in the Ladies National Championship's on 'Sound Of Music', the mare, by 'Indoctro', jumped two tremendous rounds, beyond her years ! and was just beaten by Ellen Whitaker.

28/8/08
I did not think we could get any better this week, but we nearly did!
'Sumas Sound Of Music' put up another superb performance to come 2nd in the 7 year old final today.
There were three rounds of jumping, finishing at 1.50m , she flew around the jump off to take the lead at the half way stage and just beaten in the end by Laura Renwick on 'Beluga'.

We are thrilled for the TJM and Quigley teams at how she is progressing and look daily at her three quarter brother  DOC (Indoctro/VDL Arkansas/ Distant Music, dam of Maria) who is magnificent and hope we can find the right home for him.

Suma Lothario who has been selected for the Elite Foal sale in Cavan on the 2nd October!  We are thrilled as there were 80 smashing foals there up for selection.  Rio (by Womanizer) really showed off in spite of his and mother Legacy's 4 hour journey there.

His half sister, SUMA SURPRISE will be in Goresbridge on 12th September, Lot 488.  We hate to see her go but the time has come for her to move up in the world and have a career.  We think she will make a super eventer as well as a jumper as she is so brave.

Two 4 yr. old homebreds sold at our Dispersal Sale starting their jumping careers with Simon Buckley in the UK.  Both by VDL Arkansas.

JULY 2008

SUMA RANEE went to the Wicklow branch ID show yesterday and WON her class (from 8)   How about that?!   She was very green as I have had nobody to help me teach her to trot in hand and can't manage it on my own on the sloping ground here but when she got going she really trotted out and she is so correct.  The judge loved her. Rightly got beaten in the championships as she is not one yet. A super show, very well run and some really lovely Irish Draughts.  Congrats to Willem Savelkous on his stunning Supreme champion ARDATTIN FIGARO who was the Ridden champion and a very promising yearling colt who was Reserve.

Sound of Music has just returned from 2 weeks in Spain where she jumped in the 1.40s, placing 3 times and going really well for a 7 year old at international level. We are delighted.

Cheeky Boy

SUMA'S SOUND OF MUSIC has been reunited with Sharon (Shaz) Quigley after a brief jockey change to Dave to try to defend her RDS record of winning the past two years.  They are now in San Sebasian, Spain and Maria got her first placing in an International Show with Shaz.  There was a lovely write up in the Horse and Hound about their qualifying for the Foxhunter Finals in October.

Great news for us as IT'S AN OLOGY  is pregnant for the first time since we moved.  Her 6 y.o. SUMA'S ARKIOLOGY is jumping really well with Clem McMahon and her 5 y.o. STRAIGHT AS (pronounced Straight Aize as in top marks!) who was 8th in the Cavan Loose Jumping as a 3 y.o. is going very well with her amateur jockey picking up points. In the end we used Echo King who is a 4 y.o. RID and who is jumping with owner Gabriel Slattery.  A very well made black horse with a white splodge on his belly just like she had which now she is white you can't see.  That was her "Ology"

The weather is so atrocious we keep bringing in the mares and foals as it does them no good standing around shaking in the wet.  LOTHARIO  by Womanizer (now furthering his education in the UK with Stuart Harvey) is a lovely colt now having been born in very light  condition.  DUISKE the filly from Torite (Marlon) is show quality and has that fabulous uphill front that is so good to ride.

For those who promised to sponsor Susie on giving up smoking, she has made her six month deadline so she will be sending money to the Simon Community and Shelter very soon. Pay up, please!!

JUNE 2008

No luck in the IHB Elections, so good luck and well done to Tommy Brennan who keeps his seat.  I hope to be able to "bend his ear" in the direction of the various pleas that were made to me.

We are having a run of  luck in the "Murphy's Law" category - anything that can go wrong, will go wrong!  But nothing major and we have lots of good things happening too.

SUMA'S COFFEE has been sold again by Ryan Crumley and leaves for South Africa.  I wish we could have kept her as we were very fond of her and positive that she would make a good jumper.  However we wish her new owner luck and hope she really enjoys her and gives her a good caring life. We still have a share in her 2 yo Suma's Fudge by VDL Douglas

Sumas Surprise

SUMAS SURPRISE changed jockeys due to Leaving Cert exams for young Michael and we are very pleased to have Linda Moloney (nee Ekberg) riding her now.  However we have all noticed she was not going as well as she could and now has to spend a week with a top physiotherapist to get treatment for her back.  As she is so genuine and brave it was hard to pick what is wrong and she took part in the RDS qualifiers last week. Her sire, VDL ARKANSAS is having a superb season with his young horses, including  our own SUMA'S ARKIOLOGY out of Its an Ology.

SUMAS SOUND OF MUSIC as usual travelled over for the RDS qualifier at Barnadown last week but for the first time in 3 years she had a fence down in the first round!  Dave was kicking himself as Sharon, his wife, had jumped her superbly last weekend at Wales and West to qualify for the Foxhunter Finals at HOYS.  See their website www.qsporthorses.com Maria will be back this week, weather permitting, to see if she can qualify to try for the treble at the RDS, having won in '06 and '07.

ENCOURAGE HOPE, REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Marily runs for Irish Horse Board seat, read more in her flyer (click on link above to download)...or read details below...

My name is MARILY POWER and I am looking for your vote to represent the South East Area on the IRISH HORSE BOARD

album_whippy-ids_yb97_sm

My Experience

  • As a partner in SUMA STUD I have bred and produced many top Irish Draughts, and through BLUE PETER and GLENAGYLE REBEL revived two sire lines which were nearly extinct. Our horses are found all over the world and through PRIDE OF SHAUNLARA
  •  I helped put new life into the Irish Draught when the official policy had written them off.
  • We also introduced world class showjumpers from the continent via frozen semen who would improve the current breeding herd.
  • I competed at national level in Pony Club, Riding Club, Showjumping, Hunter Trials, Dressage, Eventing and Polo and especially Hunting, which is  where I learnt to appreciate the uniqueness of the Irish horse.
  • I have bred and produced many Champions at the RDS including both Thoroughbred and RID stallions, showjumpers and the Supreme Champion Young Horse and have judged young horses and mares worldwide including in the UK and U.S.A.

My Aims:

  • As a stallion owner I know the problems associated with standing and maintaining top class horses. I want to see the simplification of, and increased transparency in, the Approval process. Central to this would be a Grading system which recognizes the improvements and “value added” as the young stallion progresses.
  • As a mare owner I would like to see the same for the mares.
  • I want to see more guidance given to Mare owners on how to maximize their potential and more “hands on” instruction.
  • I want traditional Irish Breds to have an instantly identifiable passport.
  • I want owners and breeders given more public recognition.

Any of you who are uncommitted please vote for me, number one, and send in the papers before the week starting the 16th June.

I will do my best to represent you.

FOALS 2008

APRIL/MAY 2008

I have been persuaded to put my name forward for  the IRISH HORSE BOARD elections for this area, the South East.  I have made many criticisms of some of their policies as well as applauding others.  My priority at all times is the HORSE itself. So with the motto of “Encourage hope, reward excellence” I ask any of you who are uncommitted to any other candidate to give me your support when the time comes.

We would like to introduce you to a few new residents.

Firstly RANEE a super potential RID yearling filly by Star Kingdom ex a Blue Rajah mare.  One of the best made I have seen in ages..  But she was lonely for a playmate so along came BUTTONS,  also by Star Kingdom out of a Clover mother, a potential Appendix mare of the future.

And FANNY BRICE, has had a fantastic first foal by INDOCTRO,

a brown colt who will be a good 16.2 when he is grown up.  She is being an excellent mother, loves him but teaches him manners too.  His three parts sister SUMA SOUND OF MUSIC has been going especially well in the UK with Sharon Quigley and has been selected as one of the World Class Equine Pathway by the BSJA as a potential horse for the London Olympics 2012.

Finally, while LEGACY is keeping us waiting for her WOMANIZER foal, and TORITE  is a couple of weeks off we couldn’t resist the daughter of our SUMA’S BLUE HEAVEN who, at 15 is having to be re-homed due to her owners poor health.  She arrived from Wales 2 days ago, a half sister to THE BARD by Mountain View.

MARCH 2008

Well another bit of success for the homebreds!  SUMA'S SURPRISE (VDL Arkansas/Sumas legacy/Horos) did her first affiliated class at Kill International today jumping a double clear in the baby class, the 90cm.  She had gone there last week and also jumped clear in the unreg. 80cm.  Michael Hutchinson Jr. has the ride and the whole family are impressed with her mature attitude to the game, though she is only 4 in May.  Also competing was her dam's most recent consort (expecting in May) WOMANIZER (Heartbreaker/Burgraaf) who danced around the 1m class giving his usual display.  he goes for ISH inspection this week and with his superb quality and technique one hopes he will ultimately get full approval after his superb performances in the 4 y.o. championships last year.  And then jumping in the 1.20 & 1.30 just for fun was Surprise's daddy, Archie!

Sumas Coffee ridden by Georgie Strutton.  She is now competing at the Sunshine Tour in Spain and having had the foal, Suma's Fudge, in 2006 she would be inexperienced but is holding her own very well.

Sumas Sound of Music also going very well in the 7.y.o with Sharon Quigley who seems to have pinched the ride on her from husband Dave!

FEBRUARY 2008

Suma's Castle Mist

Things were quiet in the autumn so little news to report except we sold SUMA’S CASTLE MIST, the yearling by The Bard that we had bought as a foal from Tim Wilson. She has a new home with Jimmy Quinn who is gathering a lovely bunch of Irish Draughts in Galway.  Misty was one of the best movers we have seen in a purebred ID and she will be a very useful horse with a future either breeding or riding. We wish him all the luck with her and look forward to seeing her in the show ring later on.

I took a flying visit to our friend and webmaster Joan Griffith and husband Friedemann in Germany and saw 5 lovely members of our Softee family!  They include Lucy (Glenagyle Rebel) Lucky (Ard Allez Cat) and Lucky’s 3 offspring, Lilly and Benni by Huntingfield Rebel and the gorgeous (Hofwaldecks Alessandra, aka Softie II), by Sandro Boy.  Very sadly, Lucy had contracted Lyme disease and this had affected her badly for the past 4 years and now she has been put down while still happy in herself.  She was never asked to breed but was a marvellous nanny to her sister’s children.

Lucy and Softie II

We both were invited to Scotland for the Scottish Sport Horse Foal show and had great fun judging their innovative Foal classes.  All beautifully presented, shown loose and in hand, there were some lovely foals who should have great futures. Thanks to all the people who made us so welcome, especially the Low Mitchells.

Christmas saw us in a panic as Susie had to go into hospital, pay back time for all the smoking after40 odd years!  However, a brilliant outcome in one sense as she has now GIVEN UP FOR GOOD!!  But the antibiotics had a strange effect on her tendons and she is now suffering severe tendon damage on both legs which means she is not only very sore bur can’t enjoy her new found wind yet.  However, progress is being made slowly.

SUMA’S SURPRISE is coming along very well with her riding.  She is to go to a few little shows shortly then will have a break at grass, hopefully the weather will permit it. She seems to have a lot of talent and is brave.  Not surprising at all from the Whippy family and by Archie.  Another by ARKANSAS, SUMA’S DISTANT DRUMS can be seen on YouTube at one of his first shows in the UK.

The 3 pregnant mares were treated to new Wugs and are warm and snug living out with KATIE  (Huntingfield Rebel) the 3 y.o.  OLOGY and MUSIC are being prepared for fairly early visits to stud, but with the limited land here, later is better.  Music’s daughter, SOUND OF MUSIC  heads off to Spain this week for the Sunshine tour.  Lucky her!

Lastly for now, KYLEMORE STUD (www.kylemorestud.com) report that Rob (HUNTINGFIELD REBEL) is in fine fettle getting ready for the 2008 Stud season.  Our friends from the VDL STUD who were over visiting their Irish located stallions saw French Buffet there and said they had not seen a better stud anywhere.  Praise indeed, and well deserved!
